Shedding Light on Human Need
Introduction
Jesus realized that humanity needed clarity and guidance. The first step was to shine a light on the situation so that humanity could see themselves clearly. The law provided a pattern of behavior, but until Jesus came in the fullness of grace and truth, we couldn’t fully comprehend its inadequacy.
Jesus’ Approach to Clarity
Jesus met this need for clarity by preaching the gospel of repentance. He gathered a team and began to disciple them so that they would one day be mobilized to also preach the gospel. This approach was not just about teaching but about transforming lives through direct engagement and mentorship.
Personal Story: Seeing Clearly
I (Cara) began to complain of headaches as a six-year-old in first grade. I was also a pretty clumsy kid, crashing my bike or tripping over things. Eventually, the school nurse suggested that I get my eyes checked, and it turned out I needed a significant prescription. The headaches in school were from eye strain trying to focus on the blackboard. Most kids were reluctant to wear glasses for fear of being teased, but not me, because I COULD SEE. My mom talks about driving me home after picking up the glasses, and I was telling her about being able to see the leaves on the trees. She realized then that I had probably never known what good eyesight was like because I had never seen well in the first place. It took an outside intervention for me to know that something was wrong and that there was an accessible solution.
Identifying the Real Problem
When thinking about homelessness, what is the “real problem” that we’re hoping to shine a light on? This could be as unique as every human being. In Acts 3, we are given the story of a disabled man shouting toward Peter and John, “Alms, alms for the poor.” Today, this is represented by people “flying the sign.” They want your money, but they need something other than money. It might be addiction care, a stable place to sleep, mental illness care, or a multitude of other very real needs. Peter and John told the man, “Silver and gold we do not have but what we do have we give to you. Rise up and walk.” The man did just that. Maybe part of the problem in the modern church is that we have exchanged the power to say, “Rise and Walk,” for silver and gold. That person on the corner likely needs much, but money is not what they need.
Challenges in Addressing Homelessness
Our accepted methods of dealing with homelessness and addiction simply haven’t been working that well, despite many approaches. Society recognizes this issue, and many communities have genuine, sustained efforts to alleviate homelessness. However, how can a system serve an individual? We need to get a good, honest look at the real issue. This investigation will take time and include more than surveys. Trust between the two parties must form, and then honesty can bloom. The solutions need to be tailored to each person’s situation.
Conclusion
Jesus’ approach to clarity and guidance teaches us the importance of shining a light on the real issues. By understanding the unique needs of individuals and addressing them with compassion and tailored solutions, we can make a meaningful impact.
