Creating your identity is essential for your development. But you ask, “How do I do that?” I am so glad that you asked.
I say again, you are not responsible for making this out of your own head. Your job is to spend time asking God what He thinks of you. Seek His answer to what He wants for your life? He has created you for a purpose. For most people in this modern season of history we have become accustomed to quick answers. If I don’t know something I simply google it and boom I got my answer. When you are seeking an answer from God, He might take His time. You see to God it is very much about the process. Among God’s great desires is to spend time with you. He could and He just might give you a quick answer. However, can you trust a quick response? If He responds quickly you might doubt what you hear. Remember Gideon being called a mighty warrior while hiding. Gideon obviously had doubts that He was hearing from God. His doubts led him to test the answer with the whole fleece deal. While the fleece deal is Biblical, it is not God’s preferred way to operate. He cares less about our profession or life than about our heart. Our life, profession and family life will all reflect the heart that He designed for us. God wants to reveal your heart to you. But first He wants you to see His heart. Wait for it.
Psalm 27:14
Wait on the Lord. Be courageous, and he will strengthen your heart. Wait on the Lord!
While you are waiting, understand something very important. Your purpose might not be incredible and history making. You might be the ancestor who changes the direction of your family so that some grandchild down the road will fulfill some great purpose, but even that is not guaranteed. Listen to the Lord and submit to what He wants for you.
2 Timothy 2:20
In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for special purposes and some for common use.
Finally, while you ware waiting, He generally speaks quietly. Not all of us will have a burning bush type experience. He may not be as direct as we would like. But He will speak. Just something to consider is that lies are told loudly with great fanfare so that they are more likely to appear as truth. Hate is also broadcast loudly. But God’s truth is generally quiet, a whisper into your very deepest recesses. Commune with Jesus in your heart and visit with Him. Do not be in a hurry. Simply listen to Him. He will tell you all that you need and not a syllable more.
