Even though there was much action around the court with servers and messengers coming and going, the room seemed to stop. “You seem downcast my friend. What is wrong? This is not like you.” Closing his eyes, Nehemiah said a short prayer asking for courage and wisdom in the words that he would use as he made his request. “My king, how can I not be sad when the land of my fathers is in ruins. My people are in disgrace and here I sit in luxury. With you I have a good life and have no earthly desires. You are wise and good to me. Yet I feel guilty about my brothers and sisters in Jerusalem that are living in a ruined city without walls.” The room again became silent as the King looked into Nehemiah’s very soul.
The Queen was also there and looked with great compassion at the cupbearer. The two royals whispered together for what was only a few moments but seemed much longer to Nehemiah. “If you were to go to see your land, how long would you be gone? We don’t like the idea of our cupbearer being gone for very long. We like having you around.” Nehemiah let loose a smile knowing that he was wanted and needed. Joy filled his heart with this acceptance. The three of them discussed estimates on travel, construction and built in some time for unforeseen issues with the project and agreed upon a time. Nehemiah thought, wow that was easier than I thought.
“My lord and lady, we will also need timber and other supplies to make this wall more than just a token barricade. Would it be too much to ask for letters granting the supplies from the region?” The King left the room for several moments. Nehemiah was not too sure what that meant. Had he gone to far? Nehemiah prayed again for the hand of God to grant him blessing and hope.
The king returned with letters signed, sealed and delivered. The letters were very detailed and gave instructions to all of the area governors and other leaders to do all that they could to bless the project. Nehemiah was instructed to pray for the King and Queen and sent on his way.
